Day-surgery centres are the fastest-growing segment of Australian healthcare — and the one where integration projects most often go wrong. Acute hospital procurement playbooks don’t fit; vendors who only sell to large public hospitals overserve and overcharge.
After 50+ day-surgery installs across NSW and ACT, here’s what hospital biomedical teams (and the day-surgery operations managers who don’t have biomedical engineers in-house) need to know before signing.
Right-size the integration to the procedure mix
A day-procedure colonoscopy/gastroscopy centre running 30 lists per day needs a fundamentally different setup than a vascular surgery centre running 4 lists. Don’t accept off-the-shelf packages designed for acute hospitals — you’ll pay 2–3× what you need.
Plan for short shutdown windows
Day-surgery centres can’t close for a fortnight while integration is installed. Insist on weekend or after-hours installation. We routinely complete single-room day-surgery integration in 36-hour shutdown windows, with full commissioning before the next Monday list.
Compliance without the acute-hospital paperwork load
Day-procedure accreditation under ACHS or the National Day Surgery Standards is more lightweight than full hospital accreditation, but the integration vendor still needs to deliver IEC 60601 conformity, ISO 14971 risk file, and test-and-tag certificates. Ask for a sample compliance pack from a previous day-surgery install before signing.
Get patient-tracking integration right
Day surgery throughput is bottlenecked by the bay-to-theatre-to-recovery pipeline. Integrating the patient-tracking display into the in-theatre control surface (so anaesthetists can see who’s next without leaving the room) is a small change that compounds across 30 procedures per day.
Service contract: response time matters more than price
If your day-surgery centre has one operating theatre and it goes down, you’re cancelling lists that day. Ask for a contracted response time, not just hours-of-coverage. Next-business-day on the east coast is the minimum we’d accept; same-day for high-volume centres.
